description
Preamble :
This workshop is the result of a brand new collaboration with Olivier Rocq, photographer and Lightroom / Photoshop trainer. Olivier is well known for his photographic work, and the quality of his training.
Architecture in black and white is the theme of this workshop, with a real originality in its concept. Indeed, Olivier will process images using only Lightroom. On his side, David will process an image with Photoshop.
This workshop will allow you to learn 2 technically different approaches.
At the end of the two courses, you will be able to have a global vision, and the choice to process your images in black & white with Lightroom and/or Photoshop.
Contents of the workshop :
Architecture in black & white with Lightroom by Olivier Rocq :
Sunday 03 April 2022 :
Olivier will teach you how to make Fine Art architectural images in Black and White. The term Fine Art is used here because the result comes from an artistic vision of the scene, rather than a faithful treatment of reality. In order to achieve this, all the techniques for resculpting the light as desired will be studied. You will discover the latest technological improvements in Lightroom 2022 (Ligthroom Classic - Version 11), notably in the masking possibilities, allowing more complex selections than previous versions of the software allowed.
The techniques that allow you to explore the maximum selection possibilities that Lightroom offers, by pushing it to its limits, will be explained to you. You will learn how to master the radial and linear gradient filter masks, with their different addition, subtraction and intersection modes, as well as the advanced use of the brush with tips for obtaining more precise selections.
You will study, through the work of light, how to give relief to architectural volumes, how, through localized darkening techniques or with the help of the two types of correction tools, you can simplify the scene, in order to achieve a more minimalist reading.
You will learn how to evaluate the light measurement first perceptually and then absolutely by reading the values in Lab. At the end of the workshop, you will be able to render a completely black or completely white sky. Olivier will even show you how to simulate some cloud trails in long exposure style!
The demonstrations will be carried out on 3 images.
Architecture in black & white with Photoshop by David Duchens :
Sunday 10 April 2022 :
- Presentation of this image style: you will be presented in a few words the technical and creative approach to these monochrome images.
- Shooting conditions: advice will be given on how to obtain optimal images for initial retouching, starting in the best conditions.
- Development of the file in Camera Raw: the raw file, commonly called "RAW", being the most complete, since it is not processed by definition, it is from this file that the basic adjustments will be made. Also, a few preference settings will be proposed to you, notably concerning the opening of files in general in Photoshop.
- Opening the image in Photoshop : at this point, some additional adjustments will be made to the image.
- Interface settings: Here you will also study some interface settings. These will be useful in a general way, but especially for working on the type of image that interests us here. In particular, you will learn about image straightening techniques, which are often very useful in architectural photography.
- The necessary tools: the main tools used will be explained (in particular: selection tools, blend masks, adjustment layers, dynamic objects and filters). If the possibilities and choices are varied in the use of Photoshop, I will propose here simple and effective choices.
- Converting the image to black & white: two methods and the necessary adjustments are discussed.
- Preparation of selections : this is where the creative process will begin. Here you will learn to make your choices, selecting different areas of the image, and thus preparing it for the next steps.
- Creating light: you will learn the different techniques that will allow you to create the light related to this style of images.
- Replacing sky : if it is present in the composition (which is almost always the case), you will learn how to replace it, and give it different effects (spun, etc.).
- Creating the general atmosphere: at this stage, several techniques will be explained to you, in order to create the final atmosphere of the image. In particular, work on contrasts will be explained.
- Corrections and finalisation: this will involve making any minor alterations. Two additional techniques will be studied, allowing to refine the atmosphere in terms of the play of light. Finally, a few tricks to improve certain aspects of the image will be explained.
- Image recording : choice of format in high definition and for the web.
Questions / Answers :
During the different stages of the 2 workshops, questions may be asked.
Also, 30 minutes will be devoted at the end of the workshop for a question and answer session.

Guilhem Doublet (confirmed customer) –
An excellent workshop animated by the two teachers Olivier and David.
This presentation is particularly interesting because of its approach: two different visions, two software (and it's crazy what you can do with lightroom), what to learn and improve smoothly with these two contents very educational and progressive in their development
Frankly top, do not hesitate if you are inspired by this kind of photography, you will not be disappointed
Thanks David and Olivier ;)
Daniele Schlusmans (confirmed customer) –

If you like fine art archi , GO this course is for you .
Claire Laur-Schneider (confirmed customer) –
Two very different approaches, one with Lightroom, the other with Photoshop, and in the end, in both cases, two beautiful and complete techniques to process black and white archival images. I knew the great qualities of Olivier Rocq, I did not know David Duchens, but the latter has, like Olivier, a lot of generosity in his transmission of knowledge. We want more from both of them ;-) Since this workshop, I see my architectural images transforming almost like magic by following the techniques I learned, with the help of the revisualization of the workshop video. Great!
Maxime Renaux (confirmed customer) –
A first for me this kind of training. I found everything I was looking for. The trainers are competent and, above all, inexhaustible on the subject.
The hardest part is to apply it on your own. The video recordings of the training are an indispensable plus.
Thank you very much!
Philippe CLEMENT (confirmed customer) –
A workshop with an original format, which covers the whole subject with different techniques on Lightroom and Photoshop. The speakers have a total mastery of the subject, and do not spare their efforts to share their knowledge. Excellent teaching, relaxed atmosphere... What else ?
Cécile Rivet (confirmed customer) –
A very nice duo thanks to whom I was able to learn new features of Lightroom and Photoshop. Beyond that (and it's already a lot :-) ) very friendly atmosphere, benevolent and constructive exchanges, I spent 2 excellent moments. I highly recommend it to architecture fans, but not only... it gave me a lot of ideas for a lot of other subjects.
Thanks David and thanks Olivier :))
