Workshop description:
This workshop will take place in Paris, in a room equipped with a video projector. You will learn how to create black & white architectural images, in the style you can see in the
portfolio (black & white architecture section). To do this, you'll work from a number of basic images, which you'll gradually transform using the techniques I'll introduce. You'll be guided throughout the process. As the workshop takes place over one day, I'll also have time to introduce you to various contour selection and enhancement techniques. Finally, tips for using the software will be presented.
In order to give each participant as much time as possible, the number of participants is deliberately limited to 8.

Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is aimed at all image-editing enthusiasts wishing to create high-contrast, Fine Art-style images, or to improve their Photoshop skills.

Prerequisites :
To follow this workshop, an intermediate level of Photoshop knowledge is required (good knowledge in particular of the use of layers and blend masks; dynamic objects; selection tools). If you have not yet fully mastered certain points, we can review them during the course.
Please don't hesitate to contact me to discuss this.

Workshop content :

  • Introducing this image style: I'll briefly explain my technical and creative approach to these monochrome images.
  • Shooting conditions: I'll give you tips on how to get the best possible images for initial retouching, starting off in the best possible conditions.
  • Developing the file in Camera Raw: as the raw file is the most complete, since it is by definition unprocessed, it is from this that we will make the basic adjustments. In addition, I'd like to point out a few interface preference settings for opening files in Photoshop in general.
  • Opening the image in Photoshop: at this stage, a few additional adjustments will be made to the image.
  • Interface settings: Here, too, we'll be making a few interface settings. These will be useful in general, but especially for working with the type of image we're interested in here. In particular, I'll explain image straightening techniques, often very useful in architectural photography.
  • Necessary tools: we'll review the main tools I use for creation (including selection tools, blend masks, adjustment layers, dynamic objects and filters). There are many possibilities and choices when using Photoshop, but here I'll suggest some simple and effective ones.
  • Converting images to black & white: I'll show you two methods here, along with the necessary settings.
  • Preparing selections: this is where the creative process begins. Here you'll learn how to make your choices, by selecting different areas of the image, and thus prepare it for the following stages.
  • Creating lighting effects: you'll learn the different techniques for creating lighting effects for this style of image.
  • Replacing the sky: if the sky is present in the composition (which is almost always the case), you'll learn how to replace it, and give it different effects (spun, etc.).
  • Creating the overall mood: at this stage, we'll explain a number of techniques for creating the final mood of the image. We'll be working on contrasts in particular.
  • Corrections and finalization: this is where you'll make any minor alterations. I'll also teach you two additional techniques for fine-tuning the lighting effects. Finally, I'll give you a few tips for improving certain aspects of the image.
  • Image recording: choice of high-definition and web formats.
  • Printing: During our online Photoshop courses on the theme of black & white architecture, I'm regularly asked about the behavior of this type of file when printed.
These high-contrast images, ranging from intense whites to deep blacks, can raise questions about how they will look on paper.
That's why this topic is an integral part of the workshop. We'll be looking at the choice of paper, different printing technologies and supports (dibond, etc.). We'll also talk about corrections to be made before printing.
  • Q& A: at the end of the day, we'll review the concepts we've studied, and I'll answer any questions you may have.
  • Bonus - Offered: if your availability allows it, a 5-hour outdoor photo outing (in Paris) (from 09:00 to 14:00) will be offered to you the day after the classroom course. This will be an opportunity to present my course on architectural photography. Please let me know if you will be attending when you make your reservation.

Computer equipment:
Each participant must bring his or her own computer (Mac or PC operating systems).

Adobe Photoshop must be installed on the computer. Ideally, the version should be no earlier than CS6.
Use a mouse rather than a trackpad.

Image files :
A number of Photoshop files will be given to each participant at the start of the course. You'll use these files to create your own black & white images.

Course summary:
A 14-page summary in PDF format will be sent by e-mail after the workshop. It can also be handed in directly at the end of the course, by retrieving it from a USB key.

The summary includes all the important points of the course, with text and screenshots.

Video summary:
The workshop presentation and exercises will be recorded live.

The video in MP4 format will be sent by WeTransfer after the workshop.

Workshop follow-up:
A one-hour individual videoconference via Zoom following the workshop (date to be determined according to respective availability) is included in the workshop fee. It may or may not be used. This session can be used to review certain points, for example.

If you're looking for an efficient and friendly workshop on black & white architectural photography, look no further: this is it! David accompanies each of his trainees with kindness and professionalism. He takes the time to guide us, advise us and correct us whenever necessary, always with the same patience and generosity. He also assists us with after-sales service when we get stuck on a point in the workshop, so that nobody is left "on the side of the road". David is a passionate photographer and a great teacher. A big THANK YOU to you :)

David Duchens's course on architecture in black and white enabled me to deepen my knowledge of Photoshop. David is very pleasant, and adapts to all levels of mastery of Photoshop, for my part, I'm a beginner on this powerful and complex software, David's method, who is an expert on the subject, both in shooting, developing, and creative retouching, allows you to explore other visions of the photos you take.
I learned a lot in one day, and it's much nicer to talk in real than in virtual terms. It's also good to talk to other photographers.
Now, we need to practice to fully assimilate all the techniques, but David provides us with course materials to reproduce the techniques, and if necessary, virtual assistance with zoom.
    David's service +.

Great day, rewarding, meetings with professional photographers, batteries recharged for creativity and motivation.

Whether you're an amateur or a professional, David has a lot to teach you.

    Workshop Saturday, May 18, 2019

In addition to previous courses with David, I took part in the latest b&w architecture workshop. A talented photographer and expert in image retouching, David imparts his know-how with enthusiasm and pedagogy. Nothing is left to chance, no question unanswered, and his process is implemented step by step with method and precision. This is more than just a technical course based on a few manipulations. With a little time and experience, you can transform your images in dazzling ways! David communicates his passion in a friendly atmosphere. Not stingy with his time, he'll take you to the capital's most coveted spots. In short, if you like his style, you'll be delighted by his lessons and delighted to have met him. Thanks again David and see you soon!

    Workshop Saturday, May 18, 2019

I've just attended David's workshop on creating architectural images in black and white. I learned a lot, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Very friendly welcome at the training site, with a basket of croissants and hot drinks. We quickly got to know the other trainees ... Then work ...

David is a very good teacher and everything seems simple under his guidance ... He reveals all his little secrets to sublimate a photo. It's magic! You'll need to have some basic knowledge of Photoshop beforehand. Fortunately, David sends us a detailed PDF so that we can work on our photos at home.

The icing on the cake was a photographic stroll around La Défense the following day. Here again, David was not stingy with advice and ideas...

A very nice weekend and I thank you very much for it, David.

    Workshop Saturday, March 23, 2019

Very interesting workshop in a small, friendly atmosphere. It's worth noting that everyone knew at least one other person, and this made it possible to meet enthusiasts from different backgrounds. The workshop itself was well-prepared in advance in terms of hardware and software (Photoshop in fact). David takes us step by step through his workflow and pays attention to everyone. It's hard work, you have to know the basics, but the result takes shape little by little. In the March workshop, we got a big bonus: going out with David on a photowalk at La Défense to stock up on photos to put into practice. I can't wait to see my own results. If you're dreaming of the Duchens style, as I have been for years, then don't hesitate to take this workshop.

    Workshop Saturday, October 27, 2018

I had the pleasure of taking part in this black and white architecture workshop.

Wanting to deepen my knowledge of how to achieve the visual effect I love, I was seduced by the method used. It's both simple and effective.
David guides us through our workflow to achieve the desired result, with good advice and a few invaluable tips.
Always willing to share, David graced us with his photos, printed on different media so that we could see the final visual effect.
David was able to meet my expectations and I left completely satisfied with this workshop.
I can only recommend him without hesitation.
